Lloyd Sam making the most of his opportunity | Soccer By Ives

From shoe-in starter to bench rider and back to the starting XI, New York Red Bull midfielder Lloyd Sam has certainly undergone a roller coaster season.

A preseason misunderstanding with no-nonsense rookie head coach Mike Petke effectively landed Sam on the bench and into his coachs nascent doghouse. Sam watched on from New York as unproven 21-year-old winger Ruben Bover got the nod over him for the season opener against Portland.

He has been fighting for his spot back ever since and it hasnt been an easy climb. His first official start came on April 27th; 10 games into the regular season. An uneventful 70 minutes saw him land back on the bench. Two weeks later, he scored the lone goal in a 1-1 draw at Gilette Stadium.

Despite the production, he went on to play a support role off the bench for the rest of the month.

While Petke stated earlier this summer that Sams best role on the team is off the bench, the Englishman has always had other ideas, stating his case to both the boss and media for starting minutes. His bench role continued through the start of August where he managed to break through in short time against Sporting KC until an injury forced him out.

With the season winding down to the final eight matches, Sam knew his time was wearing thin. He wanted one more shot at the starting spot and the opportunity presented itself in the form of a devastating loss at Chivas USA.

Scrambling for answers, Petke turned to Sam and Bradley Wright-Phillips to turn the teams fortunes. For his part, Sam wouldnt disappoint. The speedy winger helped open up the Red Bull offense, scoring two goals in two games since Chivas while playing an integral part in that revival.

Is it a message to Petke and the staff? Perhaps not that the Red Bulls boss minds.

Lloyd, two games in a row now that he has stuck it to me in a way, Petke acknowledged after the teams 4-1 thrashing of Houston. I am glad. That is what I am looking for. He is very good with the ball.

How good? Sam leads the team in goals-per-90 minutes (.61), nearly doubling the production of Thierry Henry (.35) and Tim Cahill (.39) in the same category. His four goals equal the output of Dax McCarty, Jonny Steele and Jamison Olave despite the fact that these regular starters have put in nearly four times the minutes he has. He has also outproduced wing-competitor Eric Alexander, who has appeared in every match, but has only scored three times this season.

Most impressive? Sams four goals have come on only six shots.

His production is beginning to make people notice. In fact, after neglecting the winger for most of this year, Petke has undergone quite the 180 when it comes to his once-forgotten winger.

Again, like I said in DC last week, I didnt think we got him the ball enough (against Houston), Petke explained I think he could have done more damage against (Mike) Chabala.

Listen, he continues. I am pleased at the end of the day.

And after this unpredictable season, you have to believe Sam is as well.

EA inks Dempsey to multi-year endorsement deal | Soccer By Ives

Not only did returning to Major League Soccer make Clint Dempsey one of the highest paid players in the league, but his stature with the U.S. Mens National Team has earned him a big-money endorsement deal with Electronic Arts.

EA announced on Monday that they had signed Dempsey to a multi-year endorsement contract, making the Seattle Sounders forward an EA Sports Football Ambassador. Dempsey, who earned his 100th cap in the USMNTs defeat in Costa Rica last Friday, is making his EA commercial debut in a new GameStop ad for FIFA14 that begins airing on Monday.

Having been a longtime fan of the EA SPORTS FIFA franchise, I am thrilled to join the FIFA team, Dempsey said in a statement. The FIFA games have played an important role in bringing many new fans to soccer in the United States and its awesome to partner with the team to continue the great work theyve already been doing.

FIFA14 will officially launch in North America on September 24. Despite this news, Javier Hernandez and Lionel Messi have been selected to grace the games cover in this region.

What do you think of this news? Excited to see Dempsey as a future face of FIFA 14 in the U.S.?

CONCACAF Qualifying Preview: Honduras look to improve Hex position, Costa Rica wary of Jamaican challenge | Soccer By Ives

By DAN KARELL

If all goes well on Tuesday evening for Honduras, Los Catrachos could be ever closer to qualifying for their second consecutive World Cup, a historic first for the Central American country.

After sealing an equally historic victory against Mexico in Azteca Stadium on Friday night, Luis Fernando Suarezs side now return home to face Panama, who could only manage a scoreless draw against Jamaica, despite playing with a man advantage for 32 minutes. A Honduras win coupled with a Mexico loss would put five points between the two nations in third and fourth place, respectively, in the Hexagonal.

Costa Rica meanwhile travel to face the very Jamaicans who secured a confidence-building road point, and the Ticos will have to be careful. Despite the emotion-filled 3-1 victory against the United States on Friday, Costa Rica lost starters Michael Umaña, Christian Bolaños, and goalkeeper Keilor Navas, due to yellow card accumulation.

Honduras, as they showed in Mexico City, have a fit and talented squad available, with even Jerry Bengtson putting in a good performance despite not making the lineup for the New England Revolution. As he has throughout all of the qualifying process, forward Carlo Costly has proven himself to be one of the best target forwards in the region, scoring five goals in ten matches, and bagging himself the game winner against Mexico.

The battle between Costly and Panamanian defender Felipe Baloy will certainly be one to keep an eye on, as brute strength battles its mirror image. We may see a similar confrontation at the other end of the field where Panamas Blas Perez will set up. The FC Dallas forward was out of the lineup for the Canaleros draw with Jamaica, but hes returned to fitness and will be counted on to bring home a huge result on the road.

For Jamaica, former Cameroon head coach and Borussia Mönchengladbach standout Wilfried Schaefer has taken control of the team this summer and will make his home debut when the Reggae Boyz take the field against Costa Rica.

The hosts will be without star goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts due to yellow card accumulation, as well as Rudolph Austin, who picked up a red card in the last match. In addition, right back Alvas Powell limped off towards the end of the first half with an ankle injury, and its unknown whether he will feature.

Both Honduras and first-placed Costa Rica will also have to be on guard. Their next obstacles, against the fifth-placed Panama and sixth-placed Jamaica, respectively, could easily be defined as trap games. And as Panama showed during the Gold Cup and Jamaica showed last fall in Kingston against the U.S. Mens National Team, neither one can truly be taken lightly.

Who do you see winning these CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers? Do you see Honduras defeating Panama? Do you see yellow card suspensions hurting Costa Ricas chances in Jamaica?

USMNT refusing to overlook struggling Mexico as rivals set to clash tonight | Soccer By Ives

By FRANCO PANIZO

COLUMBUS, Ohio  Mexico might be in its most vulnerable state right now, but the U.S. Mens National Team surely is not seeing things that way. Not after the number of intense matches the two teams have played over the years and not when considering the fact that this might be the most dangerous Mexico team the Americans have ever faced.

The U.S. and Mexico are set to renew their well-documented rivalry at Crew Stadium on Tuesday night in a game that is equally as important for both sides, but for vastly different reasons. For the U.S., the match could mark the special moment in which they assure qualification for the 2014 World Cup. El Tri, meanwhile, need a win to position themselves in a more favorable place in the Hexagonal and relieve pressure from the same blood-thirsty fans and media that recently got their wish of seeing head coach Jose Manuel Chepo de la Torre dismissed.

Truth be told, Mexico right now is like an animal pinned in a corner, left with nothing to do but fight with everything its got to try and assure survival.

The Americans are well aware of that.

I dont look at it like that. Mexico is a team that has quality in it, said forward Clint Dempsey when asked if Mexico is vulnerable right now. We need to make sure that we prepare properly. Every game at home is a must-win game. You need to get those points if you have any hopes of qualifying for a World Cup, so we wont treat it any different than that.

Hopefully we can get as many points as soon as possible, make sure we make that happen. But we know its going to be a difficult game.

That might be an understatement considering the intensity in which games between the U.S. and Mexico are usually played. In fact, even U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who is German-born, already knows all too well just how vital it is for both sides to win this big North American rivalry match every time it is played, especially one that is a World Cup qualifier with so much on the line.

In this rivalry, theres a lot of respect for each other, if its on the coaching side, if its on the player side, if its nation-related, said Klinsmann, who is 1-0-2 against El Tri as U.S. head coach. Both countries always strive for more, both countries want to get better, both countries want to be in the top 10 in the world, both countries obviously want to secure (a berth to) the World Cup in Brazil and going in there beyond the group stage, at least. At least.

Ambition-wise, its very similar to our case and theres a lot of admiration in this rivalry for each other and obviously a lot of emotions. Were going to see those emotions tomorrow night on the field, so its going to be very, very tense, its going to be very aggressive. But at the end of the day, both teams have a lot of respect for each other.

There certainly is respect from both sides after playing in so many memorable games, including dozens of friendlies, numerous Gold Cup finals and World Cup qualifiers, and one well-known World Cup Round of 16 match back in 2002.

That does not mean that the second-placed Americans (13 points) and fourth-placed Mexicans (eight points) will be playing a quaint little game of soccer on what is expected to be a humid Tuesday night in Columbus. Instead, tempers are likely to flare and there should also be a palpable tension in the air even before the two teams take to the field.

Managing all that will be key for the Klinsmanns side, especially since several regulars will be missing. Jozy Altidore, Matt Besler, Geoff Cameron (all suspended due to yellow card accumulation) and Michael Bradley (injured) will not be in uniform on Tuesday, and that leaves the U.S. in the precarious situation of having to test its depth against its biggest rival.

Im not concerned about tomorrow night in terms of switching things around, said Klinsmann. Having another centerback in there, making changes if its up front for Jozy, if its in the midfield for Michael, because I think the players now really understand their roles. They know when they come in what to do, they know how we want to play.

Among the changes Klinsmann could favor making after witnessing his side fall, 3-1, to Costa Rica in last Fridays road qualifier in San Jose is inserting recent call-up Clarence Goodson at centerback in place of Besler. Goodson is no stranger to playing Mexico or being counted upon in marquee matches, and his experience makes him as good a bet as any to start alongside Omar Gonzalez in central defense.

Bigger questions seem to remain up top and in the midfield. With Altidore and Bradley out, Klinsmann will need to carefully weigh his options before choosing who to replace his two veteran players with. Some of Klinsmanns options in midfield are Kyle Beckerman, Mix Diskerud and Jose Torres, and the options up top include Eddie Johnson and Aron Johannsson.

Irrespective of who starts, Klinsmann is likely to stress to his players the importance of avoiding the same type of slow start that doomed them against Costa Rica last week, especially since it is probable that Mexico interim coach Luis Fernando Tena asks his side to try and take the game to the Americans from the first minute.

Thats the most important thing: the first 20-25 minutes of the game, said DaMarcus Beasley. In Costa Rica, we lost the game in the first 10 minutes. We didnt match their intensity. Now, were at home, its a little bit different, but we know Mexico are going to come out flying because they need to win as well.

As long as we match their intensity, match their passion about being here and trying to win the game, I think well be okay and the game will settle down and we can start playing our football like we did in the second half against Costa Rica.

What is playing in the Americans favor is that the likes of Javier Chicharito Hernandez and Giovani Dos Santos will be stepping into a stadium that has been quite harsh to the Mexicans ever since 2001. Crew Stadium, for all its shortcomings and criticisms, has been notorious for proving a tough place to play for El Tri, who have lost, 2-0, to the U.S. in each of the three qualifiers they have played there.

If that was not enough to rattle the already-frail Mexican psyche, then a sold-out crowd comprised of mostly American fans should while simultaneously pushing the U.S. on through even the most difficult of moments.

We have history here and for soccer in our country, thats not always the case, said Bradley. Soccer is still in its growing stages, and so for us to feel like we walk into a stadium and theres history, is a special feeling. The people here in Columbus, in this part of the United States, love soccer, they love our team, they love supporting the United States, and so when come here, when we step out on to this field, theres an overwhelming feeling of American support.

When you play against Mexico, when you play in these kinds of games where so much is on the line, that can help the bar swing our way.

Just as the U.S. is not overlooking its sputtering-but-talented southern rivals, it also not overly worried about Honduras result at home. The Americans could secure their passage to the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday if they top Mexico and Honduras draws or beats Panama, but even that plausible scenario is not enough to have the U.S. caring too much about what it cannot control.

There is no denying, however, that it would be pretty sweet for the U.S. to celebrate a World Cup berth with a win against its arch-rivals in front of a pro-American crowd.

Itd be icing on the cake, said Alejandro Bedoya. Columbus crowd has been amazing for the national team. To beat Mexico is one thing and to win again in (front) of your home crowd in Columbus is another thing. It would be awesome.

FC Dallas agree stadium naming rights deal with Toyota | Soccer By Ives

By DAN KARELL

After more than a year and a half without a sponsor name to their stadium, FC Dallas is set to open up a new revenue stream once again.

According to reports in Dallas, FC Dallas have agreed a long-term deal over the stadium rights of FC Dallas Stadium with Japanese automobile manufacturer, Toyota (UPDATE: FC Dallas confirmed the deal on Tuesday morning, with the stadium named Toyota Stadium and the complex called the Toyota Soccer Center). The stadium, located in Frisco, Texas, will be known as Toyota Stadium once the deal is officially announced, which the reports believe will be on Tuesday.

Toyota currently owns naming rights deals on a number of U.S. stadiums in multiple sports including soccer. The NBAs Houston Rockets play in the Toyota Center, fellow MLS club Chicago Fire play in Toyota Park, and the NASLs San Antonio Scorpions play at Toyota Field.

When FC Dallas Stadium opened in 2005, it was known then as Pizza Hut Park, but the pizza chain company decided not to renew their contract and the naming rights expired in January, 2012.

What do you think of this news? How do you see this affecting FC Dallas? Do you believe theyll spend more now that they have another revenue stream?

College Soccer Weekend Rewind:

By IVES GALARCEP

Virginia Commonwealth came into the season with high expectations, but a season-opening 4-0 loss to UAB toppled the Rams out of the SBI Top 25 and raised questions of just how serious a contender they would be this season.

VCU responded this past week with a strong pair of results to re-establish themselves as a force. A 1-1 draw vs. SBI. No. 13 New Mexico, and a 3-2 win vs. No. 8 Maryland gave the Rams one of the more impressive weeks in the country.

It was a rough weekend for several top teams, with Akron, Georgetown, UCSB and Louisville among the teams to suffer their first losses of the season. SBI No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 7 North Carolina played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday to keep their unbeaten records intact.

Defending champion Indiana continued to struggle early in the 2013 campaign, posting a pair of defeats to drop to 1-3 on the season. UAB handed the Hoosiers the first of the losses, while West Virginia won a nine-goal shootout vs. Indiana.

CONCACAF Rewind: Costa Rica qualifies for World Cup; Honduras drop points to Panama | Soccer By Ives

By DAN KARELL

The U.S. Mens National Team wasnt the only CONCACAF nation to secure a berth in the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday evening.

Costa Rica earned a place in next summers tournament in Brazil thanks to a 2-2 draw between Honduras and Panama as well as the USA 2-0 victory over Mexico. The Ticos qualified despite drawing themselves, 1-1, against Jamaica.

Heading into stoppage time in their respective games, both Honduras and Costa Rica were just moments away from earning pivotal victories in their quest to qualify. But both the Catrachos and the Ticos would concede just seconds before the final whistle to succumb to dropped points.

In Kingston, Jamaica, it took 75 minutes before the visiting Costa Rican side could break the deadlock. With regular starting goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts missing due to yellow card accumulation, Jamaicas Richard McCallum failed to guard his near post, allowing Costa Rica substitute Randall Brenes to finish off the post and across the line.

Despite going down a goal, the Jamaicans fought back for their new coach, Winfried Schäfer, and earned a late equalizer to the delight of their home crowd. A long ball played from the left side of the field needed just a touch, which is just what Jermaine Anderson did in the second minute of stoppage time.

The draw keeps Jamaicas microscopic chances of reaching the World Cup alive, though they will need to win their remaining two matches along with getting a lot of help from the rest of the group. The Reggae Boyz need Mexico and Panama to tie their next match against each other at Estadio Azteca, and both of them to lose their final round matches.

In the other World Cup qualifier in Central America, Honduras hosted Panama with hopes to pull away from Mexico. Catrachos striker Carlo Costly scored the games opener in the 27th minute, but Panama would manage to equalize on the other side of halftime in the 49th minute on a terrific effort by forward Gabriel Torres.

Honduras took the lead once more when midfielder Wilson Palacios delicately chipped Panama goalkeeper Jaime Penedo in the 61st minute. Though the Canaleros were pushing for another goal, Honduras was doing just enough every time to keep Panama from establishing enough rhythm.

But in 90th-minute stoppage time, left back Luis Henriquez played a wonderful curling effort that found the foot of young defender Roberto Chen, who scored arguably the biggest goal of his career to level the scoreline at 2-2.

The goal keeps Panamas slim qualification hopes alive, and theyll have a chance to make a huge statement to the region and world when they play their next qualifier at Estadio Azteca against Mexico on October 11.

Here are the CONCACAF HEXAGONAL standings through eight rounds:

*1. USA..16 points

*2. Costa Rica15 points

3. Honduras.11 points

4. Mexico..8 points

5. Panama.8 points

6. Jamaica4 points

(*- Qualified for 2014 World Cup)

What do you think of these results? See Honduras holding on to the third spot? Think Panama overtakes Mexico for the playoff spot?
